Beyond the Recipe

There are thousands of wonderful recipes in the world. But learning to cook is about more than following instructions.

I believe three things can transform the way we cook: understanding the science of cooking through ratios, exploring how flavors work together or against one another, and choosing ingredients of exceptional quality.

Ratios

Ratios provide the basic equations that form the foundation of a recipe. They help us understand how ingredients relate to one another and give us the confidence to adapt, troubleshoot, and create beyond the written instructions.

Flavor

Flavor is another critical building block. Learning how ingredients complement, contrast, or compete with one another helps us develop balance, make more thoughtful choices as we cook, and bring variety to a menu, diet, or daily food plan.

Ingredients & Quality

Quality begins with knowing where our food comes from and how it was grown. Was it produced organically or through regenerative practices? Is it certified by the USDA Organic program or the Regenerative Organic Certified program?

I evaluate ingredients by looking for exceptional flavor, color, sweetness, balance, acidity, texture, freshness, and nutrition. I also value food that is homegrown in someone’s garden or crafted by someone I trust.

I believe in cooking with whole foods and exploring the remarkable variety of whole grains, legumes, fruits, vegetables, and other minimally processed ingredients available to us. Understanding how ingredients are grown, harvested, milled, fermented, or preserved helps us make thoughtful choices about flavor, nutrition, and quality.

Good food doesn’t need to be complicated. It begins with good ingredients and knowing what to do with them.

An Invitation to Explore

These are the foundations I’ve shared with hundreds of people through food education seminars, farmers market experiences, and cooking labs. They encourage curiosity, creativity, and confidence, whether you’re preparing something familiar or trying an ingredient for the first time.

Explore. Practice. Make mistakes. Learn the principles. Then use what you’ve discovered to create something spectacular.

Let’s have some fun!

Welcome to my kitchen.
